Define the basis before printing a sustainability percentage

In discussions about sustainability wording on packaging, I have encountered a practical question: the base material has one weight and the coating another, so which part does the proposed percentage describe? Different understandings of the object can produce different answers for the same sentence.

This note records how I move the question into data and verification. It does not establish regulatory compliance for a material or turn a verbal estimate into approved print wording.

Is it a raw material, one component or the complete pack including coatings and other parts? Is the basis mass or another measurement? What belongs in the numerator and denominator?

I write those questions down before requesting measured data for the relevant revision, the basis for component classifications and the measurement method. An approximate number may support an initial discussion; it does not replace confirmed inputs.

I ask engineering and suppliers to identify the object and revision, included and excluded parts, data sources, measurement state and supporting composition information. Missing inputs remain gaps rather than being silently replaced with assumptions.

After a material change, the wording needs another check against the same defined scope and basis.

Leave a review point before artwork approval

Section titled “Leave a review point before artwork approval”

Data owners confirm the inputs. The person responsible for claim review assesses the supporting evidence. The design team then uses the approved wording. That review also establishes any need for testing or further evidence; sales should not decide it in advance.

    A practical request would be:

Please confirm the pack scope, measurement basis and current material revision behind this wording, and provide traceable supporting data. We can then decide whether the text needs changing before finalising artwork.

Clarifying a percentage early can reduce repeated artwork changes later.
