What does this prototype actually prove?
My work has included discussions about quick prototypes for shape and appearance, and about continuing function tests after fitting a refill component. Both can move a project forward, but they answer different questions.
The habit I keep is to write one sentence before making or dispatching a sample: what should the recipient decide from it?
A sample does not necessarily cover every requirement
Section titled “A sample does not necessarily cover every requirement”For a shape review, I explain the curve, proportions or appearance being shown, together with differences from production material and method. For assembly or function review, engineering identifies the required components, states and decision criteria.
A convincing visual model does not establish material performance, long-term use or production capability. Nor should we ask the customer to judge functions that an appearance model was never made to test.
Send a short sample guide
Section titled “Send a short sample guide”| Item | What to explain |
|---|---|
| Purpose | The questions this round should answer |
| State | Material, revision, completeness and assembly state |
| Scope | What can be assessed and what cannot be concluded |
| Feedback | Questions, recording method and next review point |
If unloaded and actual-use states need separate evaluation, I ask the test owner to agree this in advance rather than investigate the conditions only after feedback about the feel.
Connect this round to the next
Section titled “Connect this round to the next”A possible sample note is:
This round is for confirming the appearance direction and is not the reference for production function acceptance. Please comment on the marked appearance items first. After that direction is agreed, we will prepare validation samples using the agreed material and assembly state.
The explanation makes the prototype more useful by inviting relevant feedback.
I want each sample round to resolve a defined question rather than return a general comment that it looks fine.
