Ready goods still need a shipping plan

“Ready” is a common word in project updates. In supply-chain discussions, I have encountered production being ready while the customer is still confirming destination allocations and logistics still needs booking and document inputs.

I now look for the scope and evidence behind Ready. Without them, sales can unintentionally turn a production milestone into a shipping commitment.

I establish which goods have completed production; whether quality has released them against the applicable standard; whether packing and documents are complete; whether destination allocation is agreed; what logistics arrangements and deadlines apply; and what evidence will establish actual dispatch.

Some work can run in parallel, but the states remain separate. Booking information does not prove quality release, and completed production does not prove loading or departure.

If the customer has not confirmed allocation, I ask the team to state the missing input, when it is required and which subsequent action it affects. Internal release or packing issues need the same treatment. We should not label every wait as a logistics delay.

Reserving transport resources early may be useful in some projects. Feasibility, charges and change conditions need assessment by the relevant teams. One project’s arrangement is not a rule for every shipment.

We have updated production status for the agreed scope. Dispatch still requires confirmation of quality release, destination allocation and logistics arrangements. We will separate completed and open items and update the expected milestones at the next check point.

In an actual message, replace “agreed scope” with a clear reference rather than an ambiguous “everything”.

Ready goods supply the next actions. Dispatch still needs a complete handover chain.
