What to ask after an interested enquiry
My records contain new enquiries with an appealing product direction but unclear volume, budget or development timing. A catalogue and a reply saying we can help often leave both parties at the interest stage.
I want the next email to reduce unknowns rather than simply add attachments.
Understand the intended use
Section titled “Understand the intended use”I first ask about the contents, use method, capacity or size requirements, target market and whether an existing solution or a new structure is wanted. A picture helps explain direction; it is not a complete specification.
Then I ask about quantities and timing. Is this a sample round, a launch trial or ongoing replenishment? Is the stated volume a forecast or a firm requirement?
Group questions around the next decision
Section titled “Group questions around the next decision”- Use and product: what user problem should it solve, and which requirements are fixed?
- Commercial scope: quantities, a discussable budget range and expectations for development investment.
- Timing and decisions: when should assessment happen, who confirms technical and commercial matters, and what should the next review contain?
There is no need to demand a lengthy form immediately. Ask first for the inputs necessary to choose the next step. Add the rest as the work progresses. If no budget is available, record that uncertainty rather than invent one.
Match internal effort to available information
Section titled “Match internal effort to available information”Sales can clarify the enquiry before asking engineering for a defined technical assessment. An impressive opportunity still does not replace technical inputs, price review or an order.
A possible opening is:
To identify a suitable route, could you first confirm the intended use, expected quantities and evaluation timing? Please also share any available physical reference or key dimensions. We can then suggest whether to start with a standard solution or a custom assessment.
The first useful result may be a clarified requirement rather than a quotation.
