Restarting production takes preparation
A project’s demand may pause and return later. It is tempting in sales to interpret that as “place another order and resume”. Production teams also need to prepare materials, people and the line.
I have been part of discussions about gaps in demand and returning capacity. My takeaway is that a forecast supplies timing information for resource decisions, alongside quantities.
Establish the returning demand
Section titled “Establish the returning demand”I ask about product revision, colour, expected quantities, demand pattern and required arrival points together. A customer plan, a firm order and an agreed delivery requirement are separate records. A statement that demand is returning should not trigger unlimited material preparation.
If the forecast remains uncertain, we can still agree when it will be updated and which preparations require further confirmation.
Ask the executing teams about readiness
Section titled “Ask the executing teams about readiness”Sales cannot estimate the recovery period alone. I ask the responsible teams what existing material, work in progress and stock can cover; whether people and equipment are available; what needs renewed validation; and whether other production work conflicts with the plan.
For firm orders, the team responsible for delivery assessment evaluates dates using complete inputs. An internal best-case target and a customer commitment should not occupy the same field.
Offer stages rather than a vague promise
Section titled “Offer stages rather than a vague promise”Instead of saying we will resume as soon as possible, I want a checkable path: receive the required inputs, complete preparation, review the first batch conditions and then decide the continuing schedule.
A useful question would be:
Please confirm the product revision, demand pattern and first-batch requirements so we can assess the restart. We will check material, people and line readiness together before giving a supported delivery plan. If the forecast may change, please agree the next update point.
Pausing production is more than switching something off, and restarting needs more than switching it back on.
