Map the steps behind a decoration lead time

In a meeting about pack decoration, I explained heat-transfer limitations and colour adjustment. The customer ultimately asked for something more direct: a plan from artwork receipt through sample approval to production and delivery.

That reminded me that “How long will it take?” often means “How can we coordinate our launch and other suppliers?” A detailed process explanation still leaves that question unanswered if the dependencies are missing.

Does artwork receipt mean an initial idea, or a complete file that can be assessed? Are colour requirements, coverage, component alignment and revision clear?

I first ask engineering to confirm the file requirements and give the customer a practical preparation guide. If information is missing, the plan should identify it. Receiving the first email does not mean every production step has started.

The plan should identify file checks, feasibility review, sample and colour adjustment, customer approval, plate or film preparation, production scheduling, inspection and delivery.

Each step needs an input, an owner and an end condition. The executing teams confirm what can run alongside component production. Steps that require approval should appear as dependencies. Customer review belongs in the plan rather than inside an unexplained production lead time.

I distinguish estimated, unconfirmed and committed dates. When artwork or colour requirements change, we identify the affected steps and issue an updated version.

    A useful reply would be:

We will show normal component production and the additional decoration steps separately, including the points that need your approval. Please confirm the artwork revision and colour requirements first. With the complete inputs agreed, we can align the delivery commitment.

A timing plan should explain what each side’s next action affects, as well as show the finishing date.
